To Whom It May Concern

I would like to take this opportunity to express my extreme pleasure and confidence in the fiberglass products and solutions produced by Sunbacker Fiberglass Incorporation.
Sunbacker has been the mainstay of Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) buoy torroids production and delivery for several years. Al’s fiberglass product has been delivered on time, within scope, and found to be extremely durable in the harsh oceanic environment of the equatorial Pacific Ocean
The quality of work has been outstanding, and Al’s customer service has been above and beyond. Sunbacker has taken the extra time to listen to the customer, develop cost-cutting and effective solutions, and then present them in a timely and efficient manner. These qualities were not part of the contract, but they are just the mark of high standards that this company wants to adhere to.

Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory

NOAA-PMEL Engineering Development Division: Letter of Recommendation
As expected, Sunbacker delivered on time and per contractual agreements. The finished 4 DART-3 buoys and 4 pCO2 O-A buoys fully met the contractual requirements. Additionally, Sunbacker demonstrated that they could work closely with PMEL engineers on the development of the complicated molding required for this PO, even providing input into the design process, which resulted in a cheaper, more repeatable, and efficient fabrication process.
Small manufacturing issues are inherent in the first prototypes built to a new design. Sunbacker corrected the very few minor fabrication issues which arose during this contract promptly and satisfactorily, and took appropriate measures to assure that the problems would not arise in the future.

RE: Project Evaluation: Buoy Fabrication

Dear Al,
I was employed for many years at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and involved with the design, fabrication, and deployment of complex deep ocean buoys and mooring for scientific studies. In the mid-1990, we were forced to find an alternate fiberglass fabricator to complete a critical buoy project that was not going well at the previous shops. We found Sunbacker Fiberglass in the Yellow Pages, checked out your shop, people, and capabilities, and determined that you were capable of completing the work as needed. That job was not only completed on time and within budget, but the innovative ideas, improved methodology, and easy working relationship that were established produced a far superior product than we had ever received in the past.

Subsequently, through the government requisition process, you were successful in competitively bidding for the fabrication of many ATLAS buoys and for the development of the new DART buoys. These were built with few drawings or specifications. The success and the international acclaim of the US Tsunami Warning buoy systems is testimony to the quality of work, as those buoys are still in service in the North Pacific!

More recently, your work on PICO, the next-generation ocean observation buoy system, has been extremely valuable to PMEL and to the ocean community. The new materials and methodologies employed are a complete departure from traditional ocean buoy design. Again the buoys have withstood the severe punishment of prototype testing, and deepwater deployments have proven the worthiness of that work. All buoy hulls, components, and modifications have been completed on time and within budget.

As a private consultant, I am pleased to recommend Sunbacker for any buoy work the government may need.
Respectfully,

Hugh Milburn Oceanographic Engineer

Alaska Canoe Experience: Letter of Recommendation

Al Lewis and his crew at Sunbacker Fiberglass crew are highly recommended by myself, Marvin Oliver, and our company Alaska Eagle Arts. Al Lewis is passionate and dedicated to his business. He approaches his clients with professionalism at all levels: personable, precise, experienced, communicative, flexible, accessible, and a terrific problem solver! The shop is clean, organized, and large enough to manage large projects.

Personally, I had exhausted all my efforts in finding a business that was capable of manufacturing my 36’ canoe. Fiberlay of Seattle highly recommended I go visit Al Lewis and Sunbacker Fiberglass. Five canoes later in both fiberglass and carbon fiber, I am very pleased.
I look forward to other projects with Al Lewis. I know the job will run smooth, timely, and within the price quote.
